One of the questions I get asked most often by couples is: where should we do our pre-wedding shoot? After photographing couples at dozens of locations across South India over 11 years, I have some honest opinions. Not the generic listicle answers you'll find everywhere — but genuine, experience-backed recommendations from someone who has actually shot at all of these places.
1. Pondicherry — The Gold Standard
Pondicherry is, without question, the best pre-wedding shoot destination for Chennai couples who want variety within a short drive. The French Quarter gives you beautiful colonial architecture and pastel walls. The seafront promenade offers dramatic sunrises and calm blue water. The interior town has quiet streets and beautiful light during golden hour. A single day in Pondicherry can give you beach shots, architectural portraits and intimate street scenes.
Best time: October to February. Avoid monsoon (July–September) unless you want dramatic overcast light (which can actually be beautiful — just plan for it).

2. Mahabalipuram — Ancient Grandeur
The Shore Temple and the surrounding rock sculptures offer a dramatically different backdrop — ancient stone, sea air, and extraordinary texture. The challenge here is crowd management and permission — some areas require permissions for professional photography. We handle this as part of our pre-wedding shoot planning.
Best time: Early morning sessions (6–8am) before tourist crowds arrive. The light at this hour is also extraordinary.
3. ECR (East Coast Road) — Accessible and Versatile
The beach stretches along ECR are underrated as a photography location. Less crowded than Marina, more dramatic than most urban beaches, and easy to access from Chennai. For couples who want beach photos without the long drive, this is the practical choice.
4. Ooty / Kodaikanal — For the Mountains
For couples who want something dramatically different from the South Indian coast, the Nilgiri Hills offer misty mornings, green tea estates, colonial bungalows and a completely different visual palette. It requires a full weekend, but the results are unlike anything you can achieve closer to Chennai.
Best time: April–May or September–November. Avoid peak summer and monsoon for best conditions.
5. Chennai Itself — Hidden Gems
Don't overlook Chennai for pre-wedding shoots. Mylapore's temple corridors, the heritage buildings of Egmore, Nungambakkam's tree-lined streets, and the backstreets of George Town all offer extraordinary portraits for couples willing to explore their own city. These shoots feel personal and specific — which is exactly what great photography should feel like.
Practical Tips for Your Pre-Wedding Shoot
- Book at least 2 months before your wedding — Pre-wedding shoots need time for outfit selection, location planning and travel.
- Bring 2 outfit changes minimum — Different looks for different settings within the same shoot.
- Don't over-plan — The best shots happen when couples stop thinking about the camera and start enjoying the location.
- Golden hour is real — The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset produce dramatically better photographs than midday.
At Thulir Weddings, we plan pre-wedding shoots personally with every couple — scouting locations, planning timing, and making sure you feel completely comfortable on the day.
